Since 1984, India is observing National Youth Day on 12th January every year in commemoration of birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the famous social reformer, thinker and philosopher. The objective behind such celebration is to instill the wise philosophy and ideas of Swami Vivekananda in present day students and younger generations. Since very beginning works and thoughts of Swami Vivekananda has greatly influenced people in India, and several other western countries including UK and USA.
He always believed in the supremacy and the dreams of the youths in India. He wanted the students and younger generations of the country to be encouraged and nourished with the historical culture, and ethics of the nation while embracing all positive modern advancements in science, art and economics. His ideology was a combination of both spirituality and science. He asked young people of the nation to contribute their huge energy for the development of their motherland. Swami Vivekananda is the symbol of youth and energy for everyone irrespective of his or her age, religion and economic status. Thus 12th January, the birth anniversary of Swamiji, is the perfect occasion to celebrate National Youth Day.
The day is celebrated by paying tribute to Swamiji and remembering his speeches, works and philosophy. National Youth Day is celebrated by the students and youths at all the schools, colleges and other educational institutions by performing the parade, music, songs, speech on Swami Vivekananda, recitations, Yoga, presentations, conventions, essay-writing and drawing competitions, seminars, sports and many other activities. Lectures and writings related to the ideologies and works of Swami Vivekananda are presented by the students where teachers and popular personalities of the society also participate to inspire the youths and motivating them to think for the welfare of the society at large.
The day is celebrated auspiciously in all Ramkrishna Maths and Missions throughout the world. The day starts with garlanding and paying respect to the statue of Swamiji. Students of the “ashram” and also students from various other educational institutions join in the commemoration. Hundreds of devotees and common people throng in all Ramkrishna Maths and Missions to celebrate the National youth day by participating in various activities and paying respects to Swami Vivekananda.
To make the day more auspicious and memorable, Government proposes a theme every year. The National Youth Day theme for 2016 is “Indian youth for development, skill and harmony”.
Teachings, Philosophies, and ideologies of Swami Vivekananda have always remained as the great cultural and traditional assets for the country. Being the source of energy, knowledge and dreams, youths are considered as the most important part of the country. That’s why the youths are selected to become motivated by the ideologies of Swami Vivekananda so that they can come forward for building a great nation, which was also a lifelong dream of Swami Vivekananda.
